If we asked you which animal was the fastest in the world, who comes racing into your head?

Well, think again!

The Mantis Shrimp may very well be the most unexpected contender for the prize. Their speeds are so fast, it is a little bit hard to wrap our heads around. In the time it takes a human to blink, this mighty sprite could unleash 90 strikes on its prey.

In fact, it hits so hard, it actually produces heat at the point of contact equivalent to the temperature of the surface sun through a process called cavitation! Whoa!

That’s not all: the acceleration they use to stun their prey is equal to 100,000 Gs! To put it in relative human terms, the space shuttle accelerates at a rate of 3Gs!

And guess what: There’s an even smaller creature that outdoes our Mantis. Watch the video below to find out more.

It’s from one of our favorite radio shows: Science Friday.

This is one of many images created by Felix Pharand Deschenes that shows, albeit beautifully, how human behavior affects our planet.

Living deep in the Information Age means making sense of larger and larger sets of data. Luckily, people are getting better at making it easy on the eyes.

Scientists use similar data to understand trends in wealth, energy consumption, and even occasionally to track the spread of disease.

What does it all mean? You alone can decide which route of interpretation you will take: Are you interested in commerce? Anthropology? Bandwidth? Butterflies?

We love this one and it only has a few days left, so donate now! Make sure you check out Patrick Dougherty’s art. It’s amazing and environmentally friendly!

Campaign
World-renowned environmental sculptor Patrick Dougherty is coming to the Hui for a September 2011 residency. During his 20-day visit, the artist will work directly with the community to develop, plan and create an installation using saplings of invasive tree species. The final sculpture will mark the launch of the Hui No`eau Environmental Art Garden: Ho`ololi, a new public art program which aims to cultivate community and raise awareness about Hawai‘i’s endangered ecosystems by inspiring conversation, encouraging public participation, and creating fellowship between artists and environmentalists. Building bridges between art and social awareness, architecture, accessibility, volunteerism and teamwork, this remarkable opportunity uses the arts as a catalyst for strong community building, guarantees access to a high quality visual arts educational experience, and invites people from all walks of life to create a space for community art.

Very Very Cool. Visit the Kickstarter campaign here.

Don’t forget to check out our very own crowdfunding campaign at IndieGoGo here.
Did we mention there are prizes when you donate?

Here at Jungle to Jungle we just launched our new fund raising campaign for fall 2011: Ring of Fire.

We are using a relatively new social media platform called Indie GoGo to raise the money. Check it out here. There is a super fun video and lots of incentives!

IndieGoGo is a crowdfunding platform which is a new and fun way to raise the funds for large projects by having a lot of people donate a little bit. In celebration of this great new way, we are going to be featuring other interesting projects on our website that are using crowdfunding to raise their budget. We hope you enjoy it and hope that you feel moved to help out our project and others.
